2013 was an exciting year for new adventures. I became a member of the Rocky Neck Art Colony won the  Mary James & Slater Brown Memorial Award, for Excellence in any medium at the Rockport Art Assc. for my “Coastal Impressions Morning Walk” Mosaic. and traveled to Italy to attend a class with Dagmar Friedrich at her atelier in Spilimbergo. Dagmar teaches during the summer at the world famous Scuola Mosaici. Getting to see the amazing mosaics in this school has been a goal for many years.

My Italian adventure included visiting Aquileia to one of the most beautiful ancient Roman mosaic floors, Venice home to  the Orsoni family glass furnace where the Smalti I use in my mosaics is still being hand made today. And finally Ravenna where I attended the International exhibit of modern mosaics put on by AIMC. It was truly inspiring to see modern mosaic work exhibited in ancient venues.

These experiences have moved me to incorporate new techniques an approaches to my mosaic work. I plan to continue with my ocean and garden inspired designs as well as some new fun and affordable mosaic wall sticks.

The excitement continues into 2014 as Dagmar comes to the US for the first time to teach her modern mosaic techniques in my Rockport studio and the Washington DC area this May.
