Getting to know the Artisans!

The Cape Ann Artisans Welcome Neighbors & Visitors to the Fall Open Studio Tour
CAA joins Artweek Boston to showcase tour & special exhibits

As the Columbus Day weekend approaches, the seventeen members of the Cape Ann Artisans Open Studios are preparing for your visit.   By the very nature of the tour, it’s not always easy to find the Cape Ann Artisans. Most of the studios are hidden away in neighborhoods that you’ve likely not visited but for a few on the main roads. So twice a year, the artisans open their studios (often adjacent to their homes) to neighbors, annual studio tour fans, and visitors who just happen to be here for a glorious fall weekend.

But there’s more.   As the tour evolves, so does the variety of individuals visiting the tour and the artisans themselves.  Each artisan has a profound story to tell and one of the goals of the group is to share their personal journeys and interests both in an out of the art world.   The artisans are sending a message to the community that they would like to forge deeper connections with supporters and find ways to connect new generations of art lovers and collectors.

Beth Williams opened this window into her story in a recent blog post, “I’ve gained much inspiration from my gardens this year – despite the drastic drought conditions. If you’ve been to my studio, you know that I’ve done my best to create my own little garden sanctuary right here in the middle of downtown Gloucester.   When I travel, one of the first questions I always ask about an area I’m visiting is about any botanical gardens nearby…. those are often my first planned foray. In the last few years I’ve been lucky enough to experience The Queen’s Garden and Namtokphilio National Park in Thailand, Kew Gardens in the UK, (the amazing!) Butchart Gardens in British Columbia ….the list keeps going!”

To enjoy learning more about the artists and their inspiration, please read the “From the Studio” blog under the News section of www.capeannartisans.com. There you will also find out about the incredible range of projects undertaken by the artisans outside of the studio.   In recent months, Bart Stuyf and Sinikka Nogelo have participated in outdoor exhibits. Sinikka Nogelo is presently involved in an outdoor sculptural installation called “Shredded in a Paperless Society 2” and is one of approximately 30 works in “Blue”, Sculpture at Maudslay Park in Newburyport, MA. through October 2nd.   Bart Stuyf is exhibiting at the seventh annual Flying Horse Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit at the Pingree School in South Hamilton, MA through October 30th. Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco, Camilla MacFadyen, and Beth Williams are designing & hosting the October 25th Wearable Art Salon & Exhibit to celebrate ten years since founding of this group inside of seARTS.

Always seeking new collaborations, the Artisans were pleased to be invited to join ArtWeek Boston 2016. ArtWeek showcases the tour and specific artist “demonstrations.”   To align with the ArtWeek program, visitors can expect to see demos at approximately 10AM each day and throughout the tour from Pam Stratton, Cynthia Curtis, Bart Stuyf, and Beth Williams. The Artisans are also part of the National Craft Week collaboration from October 1-16.
