Working with dyes on fabric is a magical process. I use both natural dyes and fiber reactive dyes. Shibori, a Japanese resist form of dyeing, is usually done with indigo, a plant derived dye. Resists are created through tying, binding, stitching and clamping the fabric before it is immersed in the dye vat. Undoing the bundles is like opening presents!
I discovered ice dyeing last summer and became fascinated with the colors and patterns that could be created with one or two dyes and melting ice. With the abundance of snow this winter, I decided to try snow dyeing. The snow is plentiful and right outside my studio door. Here are the first results.
