May 11th and my studio is filled with boxes full of bowls ready for the Open Door’s 15th annual Empty Bowl event, Thursday, May 14th, from 4 – 8 pm at Cruiseport, Gloucester. This fund raiser was started by two school teachers, John Hartom and Lisa Blackburn, in Michigan, 25 years ago. Since then the project has grown to raise millions of dollars for food relief programs all over the world! John and Lisa had no idea what they would inspire in others when they began this social awareness program with their students.
I’m happy to be part of the project here and very thankful for the extreme generosity of all the Cape Ann Artisan potters, as well as potters from all over the North Shore who donate to this event. Thanks also to the artists and potters who created special bowls for our silent auction. Join us for soup, bread and cookies donated by local restaurants and bakeries and take home a special bowl as a reminder of all the “empty bowls” in our community.
Next week I’ll be back in the studio making new work for Art in the Barn, June 12 – 14 and, of course, the Artisans Studio Tour, June 20 – 21. Am having lots of fun with slab pieces inspired by the quarries of Cape Ann.
