The summer has now officially started for me. I just ordered clay and glazes as I get underway on some new work in the studio in Lanesville.
My new cup series is inspired by a recent visit to the Isamu Noguchi Museum in New York where I saw sculptures that he created in a minimalist and Japanese aesthetic. I am making a series of cups and mugs that are wheel thrown from porcelain clay. I am altering them after they are made to fit into your hand for a design that is ergonomic and that embraces movement. The cups are designed to fit the human hand by giving them a little squeeze when they come off the wheel and contouring them to fit into your hand as it grasps.
My intention is to have a nice feel in your hand and an interlocking fit on the shelf with each one varying slightly in height and width. I am imagining they could be used for tea, juice, wine or an aperitif. I am looking forward to having the time to experiment with this idea.
I was so appreciative of the friends, visitors and neighbors who stopped in to see me during the June open studio tour. It was an unusually cold and rainy weekend so though it was a bit challenging to be outside I felt good about the connections I was able to make with those who were brave enough to face the elements. Thank you to all that came out to visit with us in June. I will be participating in the August 12th mini tour and I hope to meet more neighbors and welcome Gloucester visitors.
