What’s on Melody’s Easel?
My studio is partly a prop shop of things to paint. There are objects collected from travels, discovered at thrift shops, or cast up on the beach after a storm. While hunting my shelves for a new subject, a forgotten cascade of wind disks caught my eye. Their color and translucency appealed to me, especially after a long, grey winter. The round disks reminded me of little suns and the warm hues seemed to evoke summer. Once hung, I explored various lighting effects, and settled on a buoyant version of cast shadow from my preliminary sketches.
I am primarily an oil painter. I love the process of applying color to a surface and shaping it to create a visual interpretation of my experience. Regardless of the subject, the painting comes together as a gradual refinement of color, shape, proportion, and atmosphere that combine with my feelings to form a tangible extension of vision.
The painting shown is a work in progress, and I invite you to witness its evolution firsthand during our upcoming open studio tour. It’s a unique opportunity to see how the interplay of light and color transforms these wind disks into a vibrant expression of summer warmth.
As you explore my studio, you’ll also find a collection of paintings that reflect my journey as an artist. Each painting tells a story, capturing moments of inspiration drawn from the world around us. Whether it’s the gentle glow of a sunset, or an intricate pattern of light and shadow in a still life arrangement, my paintings seek to evoke emotion and invite contemplation.
During the tour, I’ll share insights into my creative process and offer a glimpse into how each piece comes to life. You’ll have the chance to ask questions, engage in discussions, and perhaps find a piece that resonates with your own experiences.
I look forward to welcoming you into my creative space, where art and inspiration converge. Mark your calendars for June 7 & 8, from 10-5, and join me for a day of exploration, creativity, and connection. See you at the studio!
