From the Studio Spring 2018: Pam Stratton

A lot has been going on this Winter. I have been doing mosaic demos at the Society of Arts and Crafts (SAC) www.societyofcrafts.org in their new beautiful gallery on Boston’s waterfront and right here in our own Gloucester library. At the SAC I was showing how to work with the hammer and hardie while working on this lion door knocker my cousin gave me years ago. I decided to make him a stone mane. Here he is so far. He will live in my back patio when he is done.

I have been teaching classes in my studio in Rockport and at the Somerville museum as part of the new England Mosaic society’s (NEMS) Exhibition. I have traveled to see family and friends down South and to the American Society of Mosaic Artists conference which was held here in Boston for the first time. The Mosaic exhibition was held in the Boston Society for Architects gallery. It was a world class exhibition of cutting edge mosaic art. One of the highlights  of the conference for me was participating in the mosaic marathon where artists from all over the country and the world make a mosaic for the host city. This fabulous water mosaic mural was designed by Cynthia Fisher of NEMS. It will be on exhibit on the Rose Kennedy Greenway this June. I helped with the Great Blue heron and the boats.

Back in December the guys showed up to regrade my driveway. So I started the work of reclaiming my yard. Kathryn, her sister Jackie and I laid brick pavers in my driveway right after the CAA Holiday show at the Rockport Art association. You may remember last June I lost my magnificent 100 year old maple tree. It was struck by lightning in the last gasp of a powerful storm.. Kathryn and I decided to leave a large trunk and have it carved into art. I plan to incorporate mosaic into the design. Now that Spring has arrived, we can start the process. Patrick Cheney who was the arborist who took care of the tree for about 20 years started carving it on Monday April 9th. I will now learn about the technical issues involved in putting mosaic into a newly carved tree trunk. Stay posted for updates.
