“We were delighted when, over and over again, a studio that we dropped by simply because it was on the route we were taking turned out to be a little jewel. We were so impressed by the quality of the block printing, ceramic work and painting. It was also a special privilege to be welcomed so warmly into the artists’ studios,” a Spring 2014 visitor
With the Fall upon us, the Cape Ann Artisans invite neighbors and visitors to harvest their creative spirit! As our landscape changes, so do the colors that inspire the artwork itself – ocher marshes, winter squash, concord grapes, crisp apples, and new angles of sunlight are teasing everyone’s palate. For the second time this year, 23 studios around Gloucester and Rockport will be open to the public for a self-guided tour during the three days covering the Columbus Day weekend October 11-13.
The tour presents a unique opportunity to engage with the artists and learn the secrets behind their craft. So what exactly is a hammer and hardie and how is it that it existed from Roman times? What’s the difference between acrylic, oil, water, pastels, printing, and colagraphs? What exactly is lampwork and how many different findings are there in jewelry making? What are the various ways to fire ceramics and what effect do they have? The Artisans look forward to engaging you on these and many other interesting facts about their work and in some cases share a demonstration.
The Artisans work comes in many shapes, sizes, and media including:
- Fiber Arts/Silk Painting, weaving, batik
- Glass Bead-making & Home Decor
- Jewelry/Wearable Art (glass, sea glass, precious metal, & enamel)
- Mosaic
- Painting – Watercolor, Oil, Acrylic, Mixed media,& Pastel
- Photography
- Pottery and Ceramic Arts
- Printmaking/Block Printing, Collagraphs
- Sculpture – Wire, Metal, Stone, & Clay
How to find the studios: The best way to follow the tour is by obtaining an artisan brochure map – found in key tourism kiosks – the Cape Ann Chamber, North of Boston Visitors Center, and most Inns, Restaurants, and other tourist stops in and around the Cape. For the web-savvy, the map is downloadable on a PDA. By following the map and the pink flags, & artist’s handmade signs, you will reach the inner sanctum of Gloucester & Rockport while hunting for studios. If you see a pink flag, just walk in and any Artisan can help you out.
Who you will see: This year’s tour includes 26 Artisans ranging from those who are new in 2014 –Pat Lowery Collins, painter; Camilla MacFadyen, fiber artist, and Ruth Worrall, potter – to many long standing members. As part of an expanded outreach effort this year, Artisans have begun to report “From the Studio” on the new Cape Ann Artisans website/blog.
What’s else to look for? Based on the success of the raffle held in the Spring, we invite visitors to join a free raffle once again! We will be giving away a gift certificate to use at any of the Cape Ann Artisans’ studios and a few sponsor prizes!
See more details on individual artisans in the Blog “Fall Soundbytes from the Studio”.
