From the Studio: Kathryn Roberts

I’ve  been an artist for 25 years, a full time artist for only 7 years specializing in watercolor painting. I am a native of Gloucester; a beautiful, seacoast community I call home. In my early years I worked as a Social Worker and Family Therapist using expressive art to help children during therapy sessions. Drawing and painting has been a life long passion for me and has evolved into a vibrant business. I maintain a gallery and studio in my home, Cape Ann Art Gallery, where I have also taught adult and youth art classes.

My work as a watercolorist portrays contemporary impressionism with a broad stroke of realism. Deeply inspired by the landscapes and seascapes of Cape Ann & New England, they serve as the primary subjects of my work, offering viewers a moment of reflection and connection with nature. Through a thoughtful balance of color, light and detail, I aim to capture the natural beauty of this region. While watercolor remains my primary medium, I also explore techniques like alcohol inks, acrylic mediums and watercolor on Yupo paper, each adding texture and dimension to my work.

My strong connections to this special place has inspired and challenged me to capture the rugged beauty of its coastline, which  began as a child while spending summers at the beach and picnics at Stage Fort Park. I find inspiration today with walks on the beach, when the crowds are gone. I enjoy bringing joy, hope and creating connections with my viewers.

One of the events I love participating in yearly is the local Cape Ann Open Door Pantry’s “Empty Bowl” fundraiser. This years event – “Anchored in Community” is May 7, 2026, 4-7 pm @ Cruiseport, Gloucester. Funds raised support local hunger-relief programs including: Food pantries, Summer Meals for kids ,and Mobile Markets. Going on its 26th year, the Artists’ auction includes 37 large bowls! Bid on one-of-a-kind bowls by local artisans to help raise funds! If you’re interested in a peek, there is a window display of a few bowls at Cape Ann Savings Bank. This year I painted a seafood theme, one of many different bowl creations of the last 10 years. Potters Marty Morgan, and Nina J. Goodick along with many other local potters including Anni Melancon, David Archibald, and Cynthia Curtis and her students, to name just a few, have all joined forces to create hundreds of bowls during the last 25 plus years.
