Tell us about how you got into this business & why (your passion)?

The path into hospitality for our ownership team has always been driven by a shared appreciation for thoughtful spaces and meaningful guest experiences. There was a clear opportunity to reimagine properties in a way that feels both elevated and approachable, places that honor their history while meeting today’s traveler’s expectations.

What brought The Highliner to life was the idea that hospitality can feel personal without being overcomplicated. Every decision, from design to operations, has been rooted in creating an environment where guests feel comfortable, considered, and connected to their surroundings. That balance of intention and ease is really at the core of why we do what we do.

What is the “vibe” of your venue? Typical customer?

The Highliner has a relaxed, coastal feel with a clean, elevated design that reflects Gloucester’s character without feeling overly themed. It’s intentional but never pretentious. Guests come here to unwind, whether they’re visiting for a weekend getaway, a wedding, or just looking to experience the North Shore at their own pace.

Our typical guest is someone who appreciates thoughtful design, a seamless stay, and a little bit of independence. We attract couples, small groups, and solo travelers who want something more personal than a traditional hotel; people who value both comfort and experience.

What is your favorite event/special night that everyone should know about?

Some of our favorite moments are when the property is taken over for a full buyout, whether it’s a wedding weekend or a curated group stay. There’s something really special about seeing the space transform into someone’s own for a few days. Guests settle in, gather in the shared spaces, and create their own rhythm, it feels less like a hotel and more like a private coastal retreat.

We also love when guests build their stays around local events in Gloucester, there’s always something happening, and it adds another layer of energy to the experience.

How do you see the arts community as part of your vision and/or how do you support the arts?

Gloucester has such a deep-rooted creative history, and that’s something we really respect and want to reflect in a subtle, meaningful way. Our goal isn’t to overshadow that, it’s to complement it. We look for opportunities to collaborate with local artists, makers, and small businesses, whether that’s through in-room details, partnerships, or guest recommendations.

More than anything, we see ourselves as a connector, introducing guests to the creative energy that already exists here. Supporting the arts doesn’t always have to be loud; sometimes it’s about creating a platform, telling the story well, and making sure guests leave with a deeper appreciation for the place they just experienced.
