From the Studio Fall 2018: Andy Matlow

All my work is hand-built and sculptural even when functional. Curiosity is my primary inspiration. I welcome mistakes, which keep me open to the unexpected and see things I otherwise may not have thought of.

I frequently like my pieces to have a timeless feel as if they were unearthed or made from materials other than clay.

I also like to bring in the element of ‘trompe l’oeil’ — fooling the eye. This comes about in my ceramic cairns as well as vessels inspired by ancient pottery. I am fascinated by symbols such as hieroglyphics, sacred images and even hobo signs, etc., which can often be found in my work.
