From the Studio Fall 2018: Pam Stratton

I have been playing in my yard, creating a path from my front door to the new sculpture being created. It is made from some of the wood from my tree and a lot of cedar from a friend who also lost a tree to a storm. The process has been to burn the wood, using a Japanese technique called Shou Sugi Ban.

I would then design the circles using chalk and router the wood using a cute little trim router.

Finally I would inlay the glass using left over smalti glass pieces from the mosaics I and my students have made over the years.

I also decided the end of the driveway needed a little pizzaz. So my partner and I designed a Tern using 1 inch thick marble. It is several feet across. We inserted it into the brick work. It looks great! I love watching the terns diving for fish along our coast. At some point the plan is to add some birds flying on the brick house facade.

Patrick as been working away at carving the tree creating an abstract sculpture. We hope to be finished soon. Then next step will be to design the mosaics that will adorn it.
