From the Studio, Fall 2019: Pam Stratton

This Summer I continued to play with integrating mosaic art and encaustic wax. My work “Interwoven” won an award for artistic distinction in the annual New England Mosaic Society juried exhibition. It is made with Sodalite, pebbles and hand made bark paper. The paper is coated with encaustic wax medium.

Since my introduction to making 3D mosaics,  I’ve made several small geodes. This one is made from green marble, sea glass and shells.

I have always been attracted to sculpture. In order to further my interests and skill in this area I traveled again to Tennessee. This time to Bell Buckle, a tiny rural town south of Nashville. Bell Buckle is the home base of Sherri Warner-Hunter, an internationally acclaimed sculpture who makes large scale music sculptures for public spaces. My class focused on integrating metal amateurs and polystyrene foam to make free standing sculptures that I can integrate mosaic work into. The sculptures will be both lightweight and very strong as their exterior is coated in concrete. Here are two examples of work that I’ve begun, the Koi will be covered in stained glass and live by my pond. The abstract will be acid stained to have a canyon stone appearance with glass inlaid into the caves, it will look like the glass inside my geodes.

And finally I was motivated to make a fun mosaic using broken pottery. This method is called Picassiette. This piece is called “Down Under”. It is 2 foot square.
