From the Studio, Fall 2019: Sinikka Nogelo

Since the spring Cape Ann Artisans Studio Tour I’ve continued experimenting with stain painting. I’ve painted “plein air” on the lawn, making outsized abstracts. Inside I’ve used the floor, the easel, the coffee table, my lap, finding every moment enthralling, loving the physical movement involved, and all the blending of color, the paradox of being simultaneously controlled and uncontrolled. I’ve yet to reach my goal of painting on top of the stained pieces as they continue to come out “finished.” I vow to succeed with that pleasure before Columbus Day!

During the summer I also worked on my “Kitchen Egg” series using recyclables and found objects to, once again, bring attention to the need for keeping plastics from getting into the environment to harm the oceans and all living things. The result is a 7’ high sculpture that is on display at Maudslay State Park, 34 Curzon Road, Newburyport, through the morning of Sunday, September 29th. There are 48 sculptures in this, their 20th anniversary Outdoor Sculpture Show. Free to the public, it’s a great take for all ages.

On Columbus Day weekend I invite you to visit me downstairs from Rob Diebboll’s studio in Rockport for the Fall Cape Ann Artisans Studio Tour. After that, I’ll welcome you in East Gloucester.
