From the Studio, Fall 2020: Linda Hogan

Welcome 2020 Juried Cape Ann Artisan: Linda Hogan, Quilter

Joining Cape Ann Artisans for our 2020 Open Studio Tour season is Linda Hogan, a well-known and respected quilter from Rockport, MA. A master quilter for over 40 years, Linda favors traditional quilting patterns made with a contemporary twist.

Linda began quilting 45 years ago when she decided to replicate for her daughter a cherished “Sun Bonnet Sue” patterned quilt that her grandmother had made for her in her own childhood. She was on vacation in Maine with a box of fabric scraps, but not the then required 12” x 12” template to cut out the pieces. Innovative from the beginning, Linda used what she had – an off-size Woman’s Day magazine as her template to cut out her quilt blocks, and history was made. That quilt, entered that year in the Topsfield Fair, won First Prize for quilts, and Linda has been on a quilting roll ever since.

Using primarily traditional patterns, Linda finds her artistic challenge not in the pattern itself as much as in its execution and workmanship. Her dramatic use of color and pattern translate the conventional into new take on well-known patterns.

Plan to visit Linda’s studio on the Cape Ann Artisans Open Studio Tour October 10 and 11, 2020. As well as taking a peek at her own work, you can see her long arm quilting machine in action; more about this later, but a hint now: this is what Linda uses when other quilters hire her to finish their quilts by stitching their decorative quilt front together with its padding and back piece.
