From the Studio: Rob Diebboll

May 30th.  This week I’m getting ready for our open studios this weekend – finishing new paintings, framing, organizing,… it’s a long list.  I’m looking forward to old friends and new faces coming in to take a look.  The weather’s looking good too.  Here’s what I’ve been up to…

Dogs and Fog

Continuing a theme from last year, I am playing with dogs in the water.  “Tide and Fog”, 32 x 32, is an aerial view and turns the viewer’s perspective up and over the beach, capturing the action in foreground and transitioning through the fog to birds and hints of distance.

“Swimmers”, 28 x 28, is a closer look at a group of ambitious friends looking seaward, considering their chances to reach the ducks and gulls.

Painting Plein Air

With summer around the corner, I’ve also hit the beach with the easel and hat.  Here’s a shot of me painting on the popples, then with the first draft of “Memorial Day” (after a swim).  Come this weekend to see the final works!

Cape Ann Blossoms

There were three Cape Ann Artisan “teams” creating works for the Cape Ann Blossoms show at the Cape Ann Museum, opening in May.  I worked with fellow artisans Sinikka Nogelo and Jackie Ganim-DeFalco to create a “vase” inspired by the “Coast of Maine” oil by Fitz Henry Lane (1804—1865) and Mary Blood Mellen (1819—1886).   Our vase is wrapped with a painting of mine, “Salt Island Sunrise” and topped off with Sinikka’s sculptured flowers and Jackie’s sea glass.

The piece will remain on display in the museum library through the summer and then at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center, September 28- October 29, as part of our 40th Anniversary exhibition.

Cambridge Art Association 2023 National Prize Show

Summer Meditation, 30 x 39, oil

My large piece, “Summer Meditation”, 30 x 39, oil on linen, was selected for the Cambridge Art Association 2023 National Prize Show, juried by “respected journalist, popular Instagrammer, and the former longtime editor of ARTnews, Robin Cembalest”.  The show is presenting May 19 – July 7 at their Kathryn Schultz Gallery and University Place Gallery (my piece is here, 124 Mount Auburn Street, Cambridge, MA).  Of “297 entries from artists living and working in the United States, our juror selected 61 works by artists who work in a variety of mediums.”
